Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse, so she could pursue her love of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash belonging to one of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
